Sundew Plant
Drosera – Sundew
Drosera use sparkling sticky leaves to capture tiny insects. They are fascinating plants, but the correct routine depends on whether the plant is tropical, subtropical or temperate.
Important: Exact care, dormancy and final size depend on the species, the age and size of the plant, and the growing conditions. Confirm the exact Drosera before applying a winter routine.
Plant Information
- Botanical group: Drosera
- Common name: Sundew
- Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Easy for common subtropical species
- Typical mature size: from a few centimetres to 30 cm or more, depending on species
- Dormancy: Species-dependent
Care Guide
- Light: Strong light; many common varieties enjoy several hours of gentle direct sun after acclimation.
- Water: Rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water only. Most common Drosera prefer consistently moist substrate and a shallow water tray.
- Substrate: Nutrient-poor carnivorous-plant mix, commonly unfertilised peat with perlite or silica sand.
- Humidity: Normal to moderately high humidity with airflow is usually sufficient. Good light is more important than a sealed container.
- Feeding: Do not fertilise the soil. The sticky leaves naturally catch small insects.
- Dormancy: Tropical and subtropical types may grow year-round; temperate species require a cool winter rest.
Useful Tips
Do not touch or wipe away the sticky dew. A plant without dew usually needs better light, stable moisture or time to recover from transport. New dew on fresh leaves is a good sign.
