Sarracenia – North American Pitcher Plant

Sarracenia form upright trumpet-shaped pitchers and perform best outdoors with abundant sun and seasonal changes.

Important: Exact care, pitcher height and mature clump size depend on the species or hybrid, the plant’s age and size, and the available light and pot space.

Plant Information

  • Botanical group: Sarracenia
  • Origin: North America
  • Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Easy with strong outdoor light
  • Typical mature size: approximately 20 cm to over 1 m tall depending on species or hybrid
  • Life cycle: Perennial with winter dormancy

Care Guide

  • Light: Outdoors in full sun, ideally 6+ hours daily after gradual acclimation.
  • Water: Rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water only. During active growth, keep the pot in a shallow tray of clean water.
  • Substrate: Unfertilised peat with perlite or another approved nutrient-poor carnivorous-plant mix.
  • Pot: Use a plastic or glazed pot with drainage. Larger plants need deeper, wider pots to support the rhizome and tall pitchers.
  • Feeding: No fertiliser and no forced feeding; outdoor plants catch insects naturally.
  • Dormancy: A cool winter rest is essential. Old pitchers may brown and can be trimmed only when fully dry.

Useful Tips

Sarracenia are not indoor terrarium plants. Strong sun, clean water and winter dormancy are the keys to robust pitchers and good colour. Divide crowded rhizomes during the appropriate repotting season.

PLANT CARE

Give it the right start.

Carnivorous plants require low-mineral water and nutrient-poor substrate. Light, dormancy and humidity needs depend on the exact species.
